Testing Standards and Installation Methods for Foam Rubber Insulation

Foam Rubber testing standards:

1. ASTM C-534 standard specification for prefabricated closed cell rubber foam pipes and sheets, one of the most widely used standards for this kind of insulation.It describes in detail the testing methods and requirements for Rubber Foam Insulation.

2. Including heat conductivity (K), water vapor transmission (WVT), water absorption, flexibility and dimensional stability.This standard provides a lowest standard line for common materials.

3. The ASTM c-16.22 subcommittee formed a task group to develop standards for the use of closed cell foam rubber for HVAC systems.

Elastomeric Insulation Installation

Proper installation is crucial to the using of the product.For Elastomeric Insulation, the moisture-proof performance is the most important of all. But weather the moisture-proof performance is good or bad depends on the sealing condition of the product.The size of the material should be measured in advance, and the whole system must be sealed well in order to have a better moisture proof effect. In fact, it is not a difficult work.All openings must be glued together by factory made glue or PSA.Common duct or circuit tape is not recommended.The outside of the pipe and the inside of the insulation should be painted with the special glue. A thin layer of glue would be good. When the glue is dry up, press the insulation to the pipe tightly. Allall tees,90s, fittings, valves should be sealed to ensure the tightness of the whole system.


Pipe Insulation

Apply a thin layer of glue to the pipe surface and the inner surface of the insulation layer. If the system is not well sealed, condensate water will be generated on the outer surface of the pipe and the inner surface of insulation layer, and then the condensate water will accumulate at the bottom of the insulation. If condensate water appears outside the insulation, that means the thickness of the insulation should be increased.When installing the insulation, never pull it. The insulation should be pushed, but not pulled.There are two kinds of problems with pulling.First, a decrease in thickness will create pressure on the insulation, and All joints or butts should be fitted under compression to ensure good sealing.The insulation layer also cannot be installed when the pipe surface is hot, and the reason is nearly the same.

The flexible closed cell insulation is easy to cut and install without using special tools.The product is soft and has no special installation instructions. The closed cell material is very smooth and has stable performance. Insulation of 3/4 inch or thinner wall thickness for a 90-degree bends, just slide the insulation to the tube, especially for refrigeration systems.This method eliminates seams and speeds up installation progress.However, for 90 degree angles or small radius turns, such as a p-traps, especially if the thickness of the pipe is greater than three quarters of an inch, you have to use the paste method.Sliding method will elongate the outside part of the insulation,and the thickness will decrease at that point.According to the thickness of the wall, the thickness of the insulation can be reduced by 40%, which will reduce the insulation performance of the insulation layer.In the thinner parts, condensation will occur and the aging process is accelerated.


HVAC Insulation

For HVAC system, the duct insulation need to pasted.This creates a waterproof layer on the surface of the duct.Make sure the joints are sealed.So remember to add the thickness of the insulation when you cut.This allows the top piece of insulation to overlap the side piece and the side piece to overlap the bottom piece.This prevents leaking problem at the edges of the insulation.Any insulation used outdoors has to deal with ultraviolet light, ozone and oxidation problems.Rubber foam insulation without outer protector can be used directly in the place where the exposure to the sunlight is limited, and for the use under strong sunlight, protective jacket must be added to protect the insulation layer, otherwise, the insulation layer will appear hardening cracks and other problems.
